With many Australians being of Christian faith, Christmas Day is celebrated as a public holiday, during which a wide range of formal and informal gatherings and celebrations are held.
Some of the more traditional ways Christmas is celebrated in Australia include church services, either on Christmas Eve (known as a Vigil Service) or on Christmas Day; the exchange of gifts; Christmas Carols in the time leading up to Christmas, and especially on Christmas Eve; the decoration of houses in lights and traditional Christmas decorations; and roast meat meals, seafood or barbecues with family and friends on Christmas Day.
Some of the more informal traditions of an Australian Christmas include stories of Father Christmas, or Santa, visiting children's homes on Christmas Eve, and games of backyard cricket on Christmas Day.
